Roger Patrick- Indigenous Planning Facilitator

Digitizing training took place in UBC, Vancouver from May 11-17 out of 6 First Nation selected only 5 showed up Lake Babine Nation, Taltan, Union of B.C. Indian Chief Office, North Vancouver, and Enderby. This was the first time of a digitization training that’s been done in B.C. also of UBC due to the 1300, Audio VHS, cassettes, that is stored in safe keeping at UNBC this training was very much needed. Both this type of training along with Community meeting have taken us away not even days at a time, but also weeks at a time. TRM (Treaty Related Measures) refers to lands, Looking at the best interest of our LBN members of where and which lands are important to us as LBN members. Also of where would be an ideal land for future businesses. Another big event would be June 24th– 26th, 2014 LBN’s very first youth conference in Burns Lake please watch for notices of this upcoming event. LBN chief and council have appointed a Canada negotiator to review our Treaty process. He has been in our office since April 15th, 2014 a lot of the past Treaty Board of Directors are familiar with Mr. Paul Paterson whom was with Canada Representative of negotiators. Another point of interest I would like to point out is on the TRM since we’ve started on this section is our members are working on maps, Smithers community was the urban community to do the map work it was the most fun project we have been working on. Everybody gets an input on it, our next community meeting are to be kept separately as it is a separate budget. Treaty office is getting a whole new equipment, like a new photo copier, fax machine, computers, Wi-Fi server, etc. The next exciting part of the process is LBN Treaty chapters– chapters of– access– eligibility and enrollment Fisheries, forestry, mining, wildlife, taxation for businesses only– as LBN have signed an ITA land agreement this is where taxation of any business on the ITA lands will come into a effect. Throughout our TRM meetings aboriginal rights and aboriginal titles are been addressed its very interesting to know how we as aboriginal can use our rights where ever we are but if we want to protect our lands we have to use our aboriginal titles, we also have to learn to practice our rights and titles.
Thanks take care till next time
